Bronx River Parkway Skate and Bike Ride
Sunday, June 24th, 2012

Date: Sunday, June 24, 2012
Meet: at Bronx River Parkway in front of Westchester County Center at 11:30AM
Distance: Approx 13 miles with extended option for 20 miles.

This is a beautiful skate through southern Westchester on the traffic-free Bronx River Parkway. It's a curvy, rolling 7-mile stretch of a 4-lane parkway that is reserved for cycling and skating for 4 hours on some Sundays in May, June and September. The road is smooth, the bike traffic is light, and the hills are ‘just right’.

We’ll meet at the Westchester County Center near the White Plains train station (Metro North Harlem Line) at 11:30AM and to get rolling at 11:45 sharp, since we have to be off the Parkway by 2PM. From the County Center, we'll skate/bike the Parkway to Bronxville, Scarsdale Road, regroup and roll back to White Plains.

Then we'll go 5 miles on the White Plains Tour then we will go for brunch at Vintage Restaurant in downtown White Plains around 2PM.
After brunch, we will skate less than a mile to the train or up the three mile path to Kensico Dam where skaters can take a train at the Valhalla station.

Total distance will be about 13 miles on BRP, 20 miles if you go to the optional White Plains tour.

Train Information
If you’re traveling by train, take the 10:48 from Grand Central (get your ticket and meet up with fellow skaters at the information booth at 10:35). It's a 49-minute ride, and round trip off-peak fare is $15.50. The train also stops at 125 St. (Park Avenue) at 10:58. The train arrives at White Plains Station at 11:19.
We’ll be done in time to catch the 2:09 or 3:05 (return train leaves every 05 and 09 minutes after the hour from White Plains) back to NYC.
Footwear is required for train.

Driving Information If you're driving, check for directions to 198 Central Ave, White Plains, NY 10606-1102 (Westchester County Center). Note that they usually close off the Bronx River Parkway exit off the Cross County Parkway, so you may have to take some local roads to White Plains.

A skater's car will probably be there or near start point to stash your shoes and bags.

Attention for bikers
If you want to come by bicycle, you have to have a bike permit for the train. You can get the lifetime $5 permit the same day or before by previously downloading and filling out permit application at MTA bike webpage Permit application and $5 fee must be given to ticket or conductor staff.

You are skating/biking at your own risk. Helmet and Wrist Guards are required. Bring sun protection, water, and lunch money.

Weather permitting.
